What FWCI measures
Field-Weighted Citation Impact compares the citations a publication actually received against the citations expected for publications of the same type, in the same subfield, published in the same year. A value of 1.0 means exactly the world average. A value of 2.0 means twice the world average.
Citations are counted in the year of publication and the three following years. Expected citations are the average over every publication worldwide sharing the same year, type, and subfield. The University of Regina figure is the mean FWCI across all University of Regina publications in the window 2021 to 2025 that have an FWCI value.

Overall mean across the window: 2.757. Works without an FWCI value are typically very recent, or of a type OpenAlex does not score; they are excluded from the mean, not counted as zero. Note that the most recent years are still accumulating citations, since each year's citation window extends three years past publication.
Comparing with other providers
OpenAlex indexes more publications than subscription databases, including many uncited works, which lowers the expected citation averages and tends to produce higher FWCI values than Scopus or Web of Science report for the same institutions. FWCI values on this site should be compared with each other, not with figures from other providers.
